Understanding PC Bottlenecks
What is a Bottleneck?
A bottleneck occurs when one component in your PC significantly limits the performance of other components. For example, a weak CPU can bottleneck a powerful GPU, preventing it from reaching its full potential in games.
CPU Bottleneck
Occurs when the CPU can't feed data to the GPU fast enough:
- Symptoms: High CPU usage, lower GPU usage, FPS drops in CPU-intensive games
- Common in: Low-end CPU + high-end GPU builds
- Worse at: Lower resolutions (1080p) and CPU-intensive games
- Solution: Upgrade CPU to match GPU performance
GPU Bottleneck
Occurs when the GPU can't render frames as fast as the CPU can prepare them:
- Symptoms: High GPU usage (95-100%), lower CPU usage
- Common in: High-end CPU + low-end GPU builds
- Worse at: Higher resolutions (4K) and graphically demanding games
- Solution: Upgrade GPU or lower graphics settings

- 1080p (Full HD): CPU is often the bottleneck. GPU has less work to do

How We Calculate Bottleneck
Our calculator uses performance scores to estimate bottleneck percentage:
- Bottleneck % = |CPU Score - GPU Score| / max(CPU, GPU) × 100
- 0-10%: No significant bottleneck (balanced build)
- 10-20%: Minor bottleneck (acceptable)
- 20-30%: Moderate bottleneck (consider upgrade)
- 30%+: Severe bottleneck (upgrade recommended)
Ideal Build Ratios
For optimal performance at different resolutions:
- 1080p Gaming: CPU score ≥ GPU score (CPU slightly stronger)
- 1440p Gaming: CPU score ≈ GPU score (balanced)
- 4K Gaming: GPU score ≥ CPU score (GPU slightly stronger)
- Productivity: CPU score > GPU score (CPU-focused)

- Match components: Choose CPU and GPU from similar performance tiers
