Major Data Storage Units

- Petabyte (PB): 1,000 TB. Used for data centers and large databases.
- Exabyte (EB): 1,000 PB. The entire internet was about 1 EB in 2000.
Binary vs Decimal (SI vs IEC)
There are two systems for measuring data storage:
- Decimal (SI): Uses powers of 10. 1 KB = 1,000 bytes. Used by storage manufacturers and in networking.
- Binary (IEC): Uses powers of 2. 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes. Used by operating systems like Windows and macOS.
- The Confusion: A "1 TB" hard drive shows as ~931 GB in Windows because Windows uses binary while the manufacturer uses decimal.
- IEC Standard: Created in 1998 to clarify the difference. Uses KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB for binary units.
