Understanding File Sizes
File size refers to the amount of storage space a file occupies on a storage device. It's measured in bytes and their multiples (kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, etc.). Understanding file sizes helps you manage storage space, transfer files efficiently, and choose appropriate storage solutions.
File Size Units
The most commonly used file size units include:
- Bit (bit): The smallest unit, representing 0 or 1
- Byte (B): 8 bits, the basic unit of digital information
- Kilobyte (KB): 1024 bytes, used for small files
- Megabyte (MB): 1024 KB, used for images and music
- Gigabyte (GB): 1024 MB, used for videos and software
- Terabyte (TB): 1024 GB, used for large storage
Binary vs Decimal
There are two systems for measuring file sizes:
- Binary System (IEC): Uses powers of 1024 (2¹⁰). 1 KB = 1024 bytes. Used by operating systems
- Decimal System (SI): Uses powers of 1000. 1 KB = 1000 bytes. Used by storage manufacturers
- Difference: A 1 TB hard drive shows as ~931 GB in operating systems due to this difference
Common File Sizes
Typical file sizes for common file types:
- Text files: 1-10 KB
- Documents: 50-500 KB
- Images: 1-10 MB (JPEG), 20-50 MB (RAW)
- Audio: 3-10 MB (MP3), 30-50 MB (WAV)
- Video: 1-2 GB (HD), 5-10 GB (4K)
- Software: 500 MB - 2 GB
