Gas Saving Tips
Lower Thermostat
Set thermostat to 68°F in winter, each degree saves 1-3% on heating
Seal Leaks
Seal windows and doors to prevent heat loss and reduce gas usage
Maintain Furnace
Annual furnace maintenance improves efficiency by 10-15%
Insulate Home
Proper insulation can reduce heating costs by 20-30%
Understanding Natural Gas Bills
Natural gas bills are calculated based on your gas usage measured in therms or CCF (hundred cubic feet). One therm equals approximately 100 cubic feet of natural gas. Understanding your gas bill helps you identify usage patterns, find savings opportunities, and budget effectively for heating costs.
Gas Bill Components
A typical natural gas bill includes several components:
- Gas Supply Charge: Cost of the natural gas itself (per therm or CCF)
- Delivery Charge: Cost to deliver gas to your home (may be tiered)
- Customer Charge: Fixed monthly fee for having service
- Taxes: State and local taxes on gas service
- Total Bill: Sum of all charges plus taxes
Tiered vs Flat Rate
Gas utilities use different rate structures:
- Flat Rate: Same price per therm regardless of usage amount
- Tiered Rate: Price increases as usage increases (encourages conservation)
- Tier 1: Lowest rate for basic usage (e.g., 0-5 therms)
- Tier 2: Medium rate for moderate usage (e.g., 5-15 therms)
- Tier 3: Highest rate for high usage (e.g., 15+ therms)
Unit Conversions
Natural gas is measured in different units:
- 1 Therm: 100,000 BTUs (British Thermal Units)
- 1 CCF: 100 cubic feet ≈ 1.037 therms
- 1 Cubic Meter: ≈ 35.3 cubic feet ≈ 0.353 CCF ≈ 0.368 therms
- Conversion: Most bills show usage in therms or CCF
