What is Ideal Weight?
Ideal weight is an estimate of the optimal body weight for a person based on their height, gender, and sometimes age. It's used by healthcare professionals to assess whether a person's weight is within a healthy range. However, it's important to remember that ideal weight is just a guideline - individual factors like muscle mass, body composition, and overall health matter more than a single number.
The 5 Scientific Formulas
Our calculator uses five well-established formulas:
- Devine Formula (1974): The most widely used formula in clinical settings. Male: 50kg + 2.3kg per inch over 5 feet. Female: 45.5kg + 2.3kg per inch over 5 feet
- Robinson Formula (1983): A modification of Devine's formula with slightly different coefficients
- Miller Formula (1983): Provides a more conservative estimate, often used in nutritional assessments
- Hamwi Formula (1964): The original clinical formula, still used in some medical settings
- BMI-Based: Uses BMI of 22.0 (midpoint of healthy range) × height² to calculate ideal weight
Understanding BMI Categories
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a screening tool that categorizes weight status:
- Underweight: BMI below 18.5 - May indicate malnutrition or other health issues
- Normal weight: BMI 18.5-24.9 - Associated with lowest health risks
- Overweight: BMI 25-29.9 - Increased risk of health problems
- Obese: BMI 30 or higher - Significantly increased health risks
Limitations of Ideal Weight
Important considerations when using ideal weight formulas:
- Doesn't account for muscle mass: Athletes may weigh more due to muscle, not fat
- Age variations: Older adults may have different optimal weights
- Ethnic differences: Different populations may have different healthy ranges
- Body composition: Two people at the same weight can have very different body compositions
- Health over numbers: Focus on how you feel and overall health markers, not just weight
