Running Tips
Proper Form
Keep a slight forward lean and land midfoot for efficient running
Pacing Strategy
Start slightly slower than target pace, negative splits are faster
Heart Rate Training
Train in different HR zones for balanced fitness development
Progressive Overload
Gradually increase distance and intensity to avoid injury
Understanding Running Metrics
Running performance is measured through several key metrics that help you track progress and plan training. The most common metrics are speed (km/h or mph), pace (min/km or min/mile), and race times. Understanding these metrics helps you set realistic goals and track improvement.
Speed vs Pace
Speed and pace are two ways to express the same thing:
- Speed: Distance per unit of time (km/h or mph). Higher is faster.
- Pace: Time per unit of distance (min/km or min/mile). Lower is faster.
- Conversion: Speed (km/h) = 60 รท Pace (min/km)
- Example: 12 km/h = 5:00 min/km pace
Race Time Prediction
Race predictors use mathematical formulas to estimate finish times for different distances based on a known performance. The most common is Riegel's formula:
- Formula: T2 = T1 ร (D2/D1)^1.06
- T1: Known time for distance D1
- T2: Predicted time for distance D2
- Exponent 1.06: Accounts for fatigue over longer distances
- Accuracy: Most accurate for distances within 2x of each other
Common Race Distances
Popular race distances and typical finish times:
- 5K (3.1 miles): Beginner 30-35 min, Intermediate 22-27 min, Advanced 18-21 min
- 10K (6.2 miles): Beginner 60-70 min, Intermediate 45-55 min, Advanced 38-44 min
- Half Marathon (13.1 miles): Beginner 2:15-2:30, Intermediate 1:45-2:00, Advanced 1:25-1:40
- Marathon (26.2 miles): Beginner 4:30-5:00, Intermediate 3:30-4:00, Advanced 2:50-3:20
