Understanding PPI
What is PPI?
PPI (Pixels Per Inch) is a measure of pixel density that indicates how many pixels are packed into one linear inch of a display. Higher PPI means sharper, clearer images with less visible pixelation.
PPI Formula
The formula to calculate PPI:
- Step 1: Calculate diagonal pixels: √(width² + height²)
- Step 2: Divide by screen size: diagonal_pixels ÷ screen_size_inches
- Example: 1920×1080 on 24" → √(1920² + 1080²) ÷ 24 = 91.8 PPI
Pixel Pitch
Pixel Pitch is the distance between the centers of two adjacent pixels, measured in micrometers (μm). It's the inverse of PPI:
- Formula: pixel_pitch = 25,400 ÷ PPI (in μm)
- Example: 91.8 PPI → 25,400 ÷ 91.8 = 276.7 μm
- Smaller pixel pitch = sharper display
Retina Display
Apple's "Retina" display is a marketing term for displays where individual pixels are not distinguishable at normal viewing distance. The threshold depends on:
- Smartphones: ~300+ PPI (held ~10-12 inches from eyes)
- Tablets: ~260+ PPI (held ~15 inches from eyes)
- Laptops: ~220+ PPI (held ~20-24 inches from eyes)
- Monitors: ~150+ PPI (held ~24-30 inches from eyes)
PPI Quality Levels
- Excellent (300+ PPI): Retina-quality, extremely sharp
- Good (200-299 PPI): Very sharp, suitable for most uses
- Average (150-199 PPI): Acceptable, some pixelation visible up close
- Poor (<150 PPI): Pixelation明显 visible, not recommended
PPI Tips
Viewing Distance
Higher PPI matters more for devices held closer to your eyes (phones > tablets > monitors)
Monitor Selection
For 24" monitors, 1080p is acceptable. For 27"+, consider 1440p or 4K for better sharpness
Smartphone Displays
Modern smartphones have 300-500+ PPI, making individual pixels invisible at normal viewing distance
TV Displays
For TVs viewed from 8-10 feet, even 1080p can look sharp. 4K is better for larger screens or closer viewing
Understanding Screen PPI
PPI (Pixels Per Inch) is a crucial metric for display quality that measures how many pixels are packed into each linear inch of a screen. Higher PPI values result in sharper, clearer images with less visible pixelation, making text easier to read and images more detailed.
PPI Calculation Formula
The formula for calculating PPI:
- Step 1: Calculate diagonal resolution: √(width² + height²)
- Step 2: Divide by screen size: diagonal_pixels ÷ diagonal_inches
- Example: 1920×1080 on 24" → √(1920² + 1080²) = 2203 pixels → 2203 ÷ 24 = 91.8 PPI
- Pixel Pitch: 25,400 ÷ PPI = pixel pitch in micrometers (μm)
PPI Quality Standards
Different devices have different PPI requirements based on viewing distance:
- Smartphones (300+ PPI): Held close to eyes, need very high PPI for sharp text
- Tablets (260+ PPI): Held at medium distance, high PPI for clarity
- Laptops (220+ PPI): "Retina" quality for sharp text and images
- Monitors (150+ PPI): Acceptable for general use, higher is better
- TVs (80-150 PPI): Viewed from distance, lower PPI acceptable
Popular Resolutions
Common display resolutions and their typical PPI:
- 1080p (1920×1080): 92 PPI on 24", 82 PPI on 27"
- 1440p (2560×1440): 109 PPI on 27", 109 PPI on 27"
- 4K (3840×2160): 163 PPI on 27", 137 PPI on 32"
- 5K (5120×2880): 218 PPI on 27"
- iPhone 14 (2532×1170): 460 PPI on 6.1"
