Understanding GPA Calculation
GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated by multiplying the grade points earned in each course by the number of credit hours, then dividing by the total credit hours attempted. This calculator helps you understand your current academic standing and plan for future goals.
GPA Calculation Formula
The basic formula for calculating GPA:
- Quality Points: Grade Points × Credit Hours (for each course)
- GPA: Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours
- Grade Points: A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0 (on 4.0 scale)
- Example: (A×3 credits + B×3 credits) ÷ 6 credits = 3.5 GPA
GPA Scales
Different institutions use different GPA scales:
- 4.0 Scale: Most common scale used in US colleges (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0)
- 4.3 Scale: Includes A+ (4.3) for exceptional performance
- 5.0 Scale: Weighted scale for AP/IB/Honors courses (A=5.0, B=4.0, etc.)
- Percentage: Some schools use percentage grades (90-100%=A, etc.)
Academic Honors
Common academic honors based on cumulative GPA:
- Cum Laude: "With honor" - typically 3.5-3.69 GPA
- Magna Cum Laude: "With great honor" - typically 3.7-3.89 GPA
- Summa Cum Laude: "With highest honor" - typically 3.9+ GPA
- Dean's List: Usually requires 3.5+ GPA for the semester
- Graduate School: Most require 3.0+ GPA, competitive programs 3.5+
