Understanding 3D Printing & Modeling

Geometric Formulas Used

The calculator uses standard geometric formulas to determine volume and surface area:

Cube: V = a³, A = 6a²
Prism: V = l × w × h, A = 2(lw + lh + wh)
Sphere: V = ⁴⁄₃πr³, A = 4πr²

Common Material Densities

  • PLA: ~1.24 g/cm³ (Most common, easy to print)
  • ABS: ~1.04 g/cm³ (Durable, requires heated bed)
  • PETG: ~1.27 g/cm³ (Strong, chemical resistant)
  • Resin: ~1.15 g/cm³ (High detail, requires UV curing)
  • TPU: ~1.21 g/cm³ (Flexible, rubber-like)

Understanding Infill

Infill is the internal structure of a 3D print. It is never 100% solid (unless specified) to save material and time.

  • 0-15%: Decorative models, low strength
  • 20-40%: Standard functional parts (Recommended)
  • 50-100%: High-stress mechanical parts

Cost Optimization Tips

  • Scale down: Reduce size if possible to save cubic volume
  • Optimize infill: Use 15-20% gyroid or grid for best strength-to-weight ratio
  • Hollow models: Use 0% infill with adequate wall thickness for display pieces
  • Buy in bulk: Filament cost per kg drops significantly for 5kg+ spools
