Understanding Energy Consumption
Understanding your energy consumption is the first step to reducing your electricity bill and environmental impact. Energy is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), where 1 kWh equals using 1,000 watts for 1 hour. This calculator helps you estimate daily, monthly, and yearly energy usage and costs for any appliance.
Energy Calculation Formula
The basic formula for calculating energy consumption:
- Daily kWh: (Watts × Hours per Day) ÷ 1000
- Weekly kWh: Daily kWh × Days per Week
- Monthly kWh: Daily kWh × 30 days
- Yearly kWh: Daily kWh × 365 days
- Cost: kWh × Electricity Rate ($/kWh)
Common Appliance Wattage
Typical power consumption of common household appliances:
- LED Light Bulb: 9-12W
- Refrigerator: 100-400W (runs intermittently)
- Air Conditioner: 1000-3500W
- Washing Machine: 400-1400W
- Dryer: 1800-5000W
- TV (LED): 30-150W
- Computer: 150-300W
- Microwave: 600-1200W
Carbon Footprint
Electricity generation produces carbon emissions. The average US grid emits approximately:
- 0.4 kg CO2 per kWh: US average emissions factor
- Monthly impact: A typical home's monthly electricity use produces ~300 kg CO2
- Yearly impact: Equivalent to driving 7,000 miles in an average car
- Reduction: Energy-efficient appliances can reduce emissions by 20-50%
