Understanding GPA
GPA Scale
4.0 is the maximum GPA on a standard scale, with A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.
Weighted GPA
Some schools use weighted GPA for advanced courses (AP, IB, Honors)
Calculation
GPA = (Sum of Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Total Credits
Academic Standing
Most schools require 2.0+ GPA for good academic standing
Understanding Exam Score Calculation
Exam score calculators help students convert raw scores to letter grades and calculate GPA. Understanding how grades are calculated helps you set realistic academic goals and track your progress throughout the semester. Most institutions use a 4.0 grading scale where A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, and F = 0.0.
How to Calculate GPA
GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the following formula:
- Step 1: Convert each letter grade to grade points (A=4.0, B=3.0, etc.)
- Step 2: Multiply grade points by credit hours for each course
- Step 3: Add up all the quality points (grade points × credits)
- Step 4: Divide total quality points by total credit hours
- Formula: GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits)
Grade Conversion Chart
Standard grade conversion (may vary by institution):
- A (90-100%): 4.0 GPA - Excellent performance
- B (80-89%): 3.0 GPA - Good performance
- C (70-79%): 2.0 GPA - Satisfactory performance
- D (60-69%): 1.0 GPA - Below average, may not count toward major
- F (0-59%): 0.0 GPA - Failing, no credit earned
Academic Standing
Most universities use GPA to determine academic standing:
- Dean's List: Typically 3.5+ GPA for the semester
- Good Standing: 2.0+ GPA cumulative
- Academic Probation: Below 2.0 GPA
- Graduation Requirements: Usually 2.0+ cumulative GPA
- Honors Graduation: Cum Laude (3.5+), Magna Cum Laude (3.7+), Summa Cum Laude (3.9+)
