How to Calculate Required Final Exam Score
To calculate what score you need on your final exam, you need to know your current grade, the weight of the final exam, and your desired final grade. The formula is:
- Required Final Score = (Desired Grade - Current Grade × (1 - Weight)) ÷ Weight
- Example: If you have 85%, final is worth 30%, and you want 90%: (90 - 85 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 91.67%
Understanding the Calculation
The calculation considers:
- Current Grade: Your grade before the final exam (based on all assignments, tests, etc.)
- Final Weight: How much the final exam counts toward your final grade (e.g., 30%)
- Desired Grade: The final grade you want to achieve
- Weight Remaining: 100% - Current Weight (how much the final is worth)
Interpreting Results
The calculator will tell you if your goal is:
- Possible: You need less than 90% on the final
- Challenging: You need 90-95% on the final
- Difficult: You need 95-100% on the final
- Impossible: You need more than 100% (not possible)
