Understanding Sleep Cycles
A complete sleep cycle lasts approximately 90 minutes and consists of four distinct stages. Waking up at the end of a sleep cycle (rather than in the middle of one) helps you feel more refreshed and alert. This calculator helps you plan your sleep schedule to wake up at optimal times.
The Four Sleep Stages
Each 90-minute sleep cycle includes:
- Stage 1 - Light Sleep (5%): Transition between wakefulness and sleep, easily awakened
- Stage 2 - Light Sleep (45%): Body temperature drops, heart rate slows, preparing for deep sleep
- Stage 3 - Deep Sleep (25%): Most restorative stage, body repairs tissues and builds bone/muscle
- REM Sleep (25%): Rapid Eye Movement, when most dreaming occurs, important for memory and learning
Why Sleep Cycle Timing Matters
Waking up at the right time in your sleep cycle can dramatically affect how you feel:
- Wake during light sleep: Feel refreshed and alert, easy to get out of bed
- Wake during deep sleep: Feel groggy, disoriented, and tired (sleep inertia)
- Wake during REM sleep: May remember dreams vividly, feel somewhat refreshed
- Optimal timing: Wake at the end of a complete 90-minute cycle
Recommended Sleep Duration
Different age groups need different amounts of sleep:
- Adults (18-64): 7-9 hours (5-6 cycles)
- Teenagers (14-17): 8-10 hours (5-7 cycles)
- School-age (6-13): 9-11 hours (6-7 cycles)
- Older adults (65+): 7-8 hours (5 cycles)
