Understanding Pass/Fail Calculations
A pass/fail calculator helps students determine what grade they need on final exams or remaining assignments to pass a course. By inputting your current grades and the weight of remaining assignments, you can calculate exactly what scores you need to achieve your target grade.
How to Use This Calculator
Follow these steps to calculate your required final grade:
- Step 1: Enter all your current assignment grades and their weights
- Step 2: Enter the weight of the final exam or remaining assignments
- Step 3: Select your target passing grade (D, C, B, or A)
- Step 4: Click "Calculate" to see what you need on the final
- Step 5: View your progress bar and detailed breakdown
- Step 6: Use the "What If?" tab to explore different scenarios
Weighted Grade Formula
The calculator uses the weighted average formula:
- Current Grade: Sum of (Grade × Weight) for all completed assignments
- Final Grade: (Current Grade × Current Weight) + (Final Score × Final Weight)
- Required Final: (Target Grade - Current Grade × Current Weight) ÷ Final Weight
- Example: If you have 85% (70% weight) and need 70% overall with 30% final: Need 41.67% on final
Grade Scale Reference
Standard grading scale used in most institutions:

- C (70-79%): Average - Satisfactory performance
- D (60-69%): Below Average - Minimum passing grade
- F (0-59%): Failing - No credit earned
