Understanding Social Media Metrics
Engagement Rate (ER)
ER measures how actively involved your audience is with your content. It's the most important metric for algorithmic reach.
Formula (by Followers): ((Likes + Comments + Shares) / Followers) × 100
Formula (by Reach): ((Likes + Comments + Shares) / Reach) × 100 (More accurate, as it excludes inactive followers).
Industry Benchmarks (ER)
Average engagement rates vary significantly by platform:
| Platform | Average ER | Good ER |
|---|---|---|
| 0.60% | > 1.00% | |
| TikTok | 2.50% | > 4.00% |
| 0.15% | > 0.30% | |
| 0.20% | > 0.50% | |
| Twitter / X | 0.05% | > 0.10% |
Follower Growth Rate
Measures the speed at which your audience is expanding. A healthy account should see consistent, organic growth.
Formula: ((Ending Followers - Starting Followers) / Starting Followers) × 100
Tip: Track this monthly. A 2-5% monthly growth rate is considered healthy for most established accounts.
Cost Per Engagement (CPE)
CPE tells you how much you pay for each interaction (like, comment, share, click) on your paid social media campaigns.
Formula: Total Ad Spend / Total Engagements
Tip: A lower CPE means your ad creative is resonating well with the target audience. Compare CPE across different ad sets to optimize your budget.
